The Monstein Brewery takes its name from the old Walser village of Monstein. The small village has barely 200 inhabitants, but two small churches. At the entrance to the village there is a small primary school on the right and a small grocer’s shop with a post office counter on the left.
From Filisur, take the RhB to Glaris railway station, then bus number 10 up the mountain to Monstein. At the bus stop, just opposite the small grocer’s shop, 50 metres up the road on the right-hand side is the building of the old Monstein alpine dairy, which has been home to the small Monstein brewery since 2001. Because Monstein lies at an altitude of 1625 metres, the brewery was long considered the “highest brewery in Europe”.
There are basically only four raw materials in beer: malt, water, hops and yeast. “Making ingenious beers from these four raw materials is the real art,” Basti the brewer tells us.
